Far too many American Students get freaked out when it comes to higher mathematics, or advanced placement classes in High School. Interestingly enough, Chinese students do not seem to have the same problems. Some students assume that the Chinese are just smarter than Americans, but that clearly is not so.
You see, in China the students learn some 45,000 symbols and characters during their schooling. In the US the students are not required to learn many symbols at all, and the ones they do learn are fairly simple things like pie, and other symbols used in math classes.
Not long ago, an acquaintance mentioned to me; “I might even look into enrolling in a class in a nearby community college. Some of the math courses are daunting cours particuliers maths. I’ve always done well with numbers, but stayed away from the real advanced stuff.”
Students of higher math need to back up and think about all this from another angle, and from a philosophical perspective. You see, it’s not really advanced, they just start using Letters and Symbols more, once you learn what they are for, it’s fairly easy, it is like learning a new vocabulary.
Concentrate on learning the symbols, what they stand for, and think about the 2D, 3D, or 4D visual and spatial areas or components these mathematical equations along with all these symbols represent. If you will do it that way, in an abstract way, you will be able to overcome your fear of higher math, and keep up with all the other students in the class. Relax! Take it one step at a time.
